Capturing the spirit of this attitude, here’s bipolar’s second vinyl release – three great tracks to transport you right into the heart of the action.
A1. Roforofo Fight (Kay Sputnik mud wrestling edit) / Fela K
Kay Sputnik beefs up the bass drums and adds some modern twists to crisp up this Fela Kuti classic. ‘Rofo’ means mud in Yoruba, and it’s a mudslinging game that Fela initially translated into music, and Sputnik – into the future. You’ll be knee deep before you know it.
B1. Skin I’m In (Kay Sputnik raw disco edit) / Sly & The Family Stone
DJs are treated to an extra-long rework of this Sly & The Family Stone gem, retaining all the requisite funk-laden hooks but with extended rhythm sections, floor-filling vocal licks and some deft EQ work transposing it seamlessly into a 21st-century context.
B2. Unbreakable (Kay Sputnik treat) / Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys is taken to the next level on this re-edit, her voice soaring over a deep Eddie Kendricks chord progression that’s lifted from an original just crying out for some more space to breathe. Before, there was only a short live version of this classic soul tune and now, there’s this deeply satisfying one ready and waiting to hot up a dancefloor.
